Diabetic Eye Exams in Toronto
Why are Eye Exams Important for Diabetics?
At Bayview Vision, we strongly recommend that our diabetic patients have their eyes examined on an annual basis in order to keep a close eye on their ocular health.
Similar to our comprehensive eye exams, our diabetic eye exams also involve additional testing to ensure any problems are spotted before they occur. We take pride in gathering the most comprehensive and detailed information regarding your eye health in order to detect and protect your vision to the best of our ability.
Diabetes is a serious condition that can be detrimental to one’s ocular health in a variety of ways. In addition to making someone more susceptible to other eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, diabetes puts you at an increased risk of developing diabetic retinopathy.
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
As a result of prolonged elevated blood sugar levels, diabetic patients often suffer from this condition which results in blood and fluid leakage into the eye cavity. In order to compensate for this damage, the body tries to reform these blood vessels, however, these newly formed vessels are often weak and irregularly shaped, which can ultimately cause retinal scarring and significant vision loss and/or blindness.
Diabetes is currently the leading cause of blindness in Canada.
